What is a serial server

For serial server, the two key words are serial port and network. Networks are divided into intranet and extranet. Intranet generally refers to Ethernet and extranet refers to Internet. It is an effective means of global communication. Before the popularity of network, the data exchange between equipment and computer was generally realized through simple RS232; If long-distance transmission is required, RS485 (more than 1000 meters at most) can also be used.

With the development of network and modern information technology, several requirements for equipment are gradually put forward:

1. Some applications require remote monitoring of equipment distributed around the world.

2. In applications such as computer room monitoring, self-service banking system communication, office building automatic control system, etc., there is already a complete network wiring. Can these existing network facilities be used to realize equipment communication.

3. For RS232 interface, only one serial port of PC can be connected to one serial port device. If multiple devices need to be connected, the original serial port scheme will not be easy to expand, while the network will not have this problem.

For the above reasons, the device needs to be connected to the network. However, thousands of original serial port devices already exist, and the massive transformation of these devices is obviously not achieved overnight.
